Our Story

Advisory Built on
Considered Judgement

Cinnabar Arc was founded on the belief that the most consequential business decisions deserve more than a standard framework and a junior analyst.

Our Foundation

Who We Are

Cinnabar Arc was established to fill a specific gap in the Hong Kong advisory landscape: a firm small enough to engage personally with each client's situation, but experienced enough to handle complexity without simplifying it away.

Our name draws from the mineral cinnabar — a compound found deep in the earth, formed under pressure, and long associated in Chinese tradition with clarity, vitality, and protection. The arc speaks to movement: a trajectory, a considered path from one state to another.

Together, the name reflects what we try to bring to each engagement: substance formed through experience, and a clear sense of direction through uncertainty.

Our Mission

What Drives Us

We help business owners, leadership teams, and investors make and implement decisions that genuinely matter — exits, team rebuilds, regulatory repositioning. These are moments where good advice is more than useful; it changes the outcome.

Our work is most valuable when clients are facing situations that don't have clear precedents, where the stakes are meaningful, and where internal perspectives alone are insufficient. We bring an outside view trained on a wide range of business situations in Hong Kong and across the region.

We measure our success not by the volume of engagements but by whether clients achieve what they set out to achieve — and whether they found the process worthwhile.

How We Operate

Our Working Values

Candour

We share what we actually observe, including things that may be difficult to hear. Advisory relationships built on comfortable agreement rarely produce good decisions.

Discretion

Client situations and identities are held in strict confidence. We do not discuss one client's circumstances with another, and we do not use client engagements as case studies without explicit consent.

Relevance

We tailor our work to each client's specific situation. Generic frameworks applied without genuine adaptation are of limited value and we do not charge for them.

Continuity

The senior advisors who design an engagement also deliver it. We don't pass work to associates once the scope is agreed upon.

Collaboration

We work alongside clients rather than presenting conclusions from a distance. The best outcomes emerge from a genuine exchange between advisory perspective and internal knowledge.

Practicality

Deliverables are designed to be used. Recommendations that cannot be acted on — due to complexity, resource constraints, or organisational realities — are not recommendations worth making.

Standards

Professional Standards We Maintain

Every engagement is conducted within a clear professional framework. We hold ourselves to these standards regardless of engagement size or duration.

Client Confidentiality

All engagement details, client identities, and commercially sensitive information are treated as strictly confidential under our advisory engagement agreement.

Conflict of Interest Management

We screen for potential conflicts prior to every engagement and disclose any relevant relationships. We decline engagements where independence cannot be preserved.

Professional Development

Advisory team members maintain active professional memberships and structured continuing education relevant to their practice areas.

Clear Engagement Terms

Scope, deliverables, timeline, and fees are agreed upon in writing before any billable work begins. We do not proceed on vague instructions or verbal arrangements.

Data Handling

Client data is stored securely, accessed only by relevant team members, and disposed of appropriately at the end of an engagement retention period.

Fee Transparency

Fees are agreed as a fixed amount prior to commencement. There are no open retainers, no scope-creep billing, and no charges for work not previously agreed upon.

Context & Expertise

Advisory Shaped by Hong Kong's Specific Environment

Hong Kong's status as an international financial centre, common law jurisdiction, and the primary gateway to mainland Chinese markets creates a distinctive advisory context. Corporate structures, ownership arrangements, regulatory frameworks, and transaction conventions differ meaningfully from those in other major markets — and business decisions that appear straightforward in other jurisdictions often carry additional layers of complexity here.

Cinnabar Arc's advisory practice is shaped by this context. Exit strategy engagements account for Hong Kong's particular mix of trade sale structures, management buyout conventions, and the increasing relevance of mainland-based acquirers. Team effectiveness work is calibrated to the cross-cultural dynamics that characterise many organisations in the city — where international leadership cultures intersect with local professional norms and, increasingly, mainland operating environments.

Regulatory affairs strategy draws on direct familiarity with Hong Kong's sectoral regulators, their consultative processes, and the expectations they hold for well-managed organisations. Proactive engagement with regulatory stakeholders — rather than reactive compliance — has become a meaningful source of competitive positioning for organisations that invest in it.

Our engagements are conducted entirely in English, and we work with clients whose operations span Hong Kong, mainland China, and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Where engagements require specialist legal, accounting, or sector expertise, we work alongside clients' existing professional advisors rather than displacing them.
